Important Crime Watch Update July 2, 2008 As reported on the-knolls.net, our neighborhood was just complemented last week at our Crime Watch meeting for our almost perfect crime statistics, having practically no major, and very little crime in the history of our neighborhood. Unfortunately, we had a burglary and attempted full break-in on Monday night on Angel Fire Drive. A theif went into an unlocked car in the driveway and used the garage door opener to open the garage. Golf clubs were stolen out of the car, the garage was opened and items were moved around for the purpose of stealing and finally, the door to the house was open at 2:00 AM. Fortunately, our neighbor had her burglar alarm ON and the siren sent the thief (thieves) running. Be sure to use your alarm, as it will serve as a good deterent, especially at night. Also remember to never leave valuables in your car and always lock your car doors.
Our Richardson Crime Prevention Officer, David Spigelmyer attended our meeting and spoke about some of the issues we've been experiencing in the Knolls and gave tips for overall neighborhood crime prevention. While the stats for our area of Richardson are exceptionally favorable, our neighbors specifically have experienced an increase in minor nuisances which primarily seem like pranks but in fact are, in most cases felonies, because the persons performing the prank are illegally entering someone’s property. Officer Spigelmyer recommends a more organized crime watch program for our neighborhood for two reasons. One is to “nip these issues in the bud” before they escalate further. We seriously need to maintain a zero tolerance crime policy –regardless of the intent of those committing the crime. The other reason a more serious crime watch program is necessary is to protect our own kids who may be involved in these pranks. Whether its peer pressure or a person’s primary intention, a prank that involves committing a true felony can get a kid hurt or in big trouble. To qualify for official crime watch, we need at least 20 households to volunteer. These volunteers will have assignments related to their area of the neighborhood and certain activities related to all of the Knolls. The program as a whole needs to conduct at least nine hours of neighborhood patrol by car, per month. The volunteers will have a magnetic Crime Watch banner to put on their side, car door as a visible statement that the Knolls is being patrolled. Officer Spigelmyer proposed that four volunteers could eachdrive just over two hours per month to meet our minimum qualification. The magnetic signs and other materials are provided at not cost to us, by the Richardson Neighborhood Crime Watch program. If you are interested in joining as a volunteer and qualifying our program, please send an email to crime.watch@the-knolls.net or call Jona at 972-234-5765. If you know the kids committing these crimes, you may want to know more facts about how serious these crimes may be and what might happen to those involved. Pranks peformed at night that involve trespassing, could result in a very violent and unfortunate outcome.
